Rangaswamy Ragu hailing from Thirukoilur, Tamilnadu is a student of the Ramakrishna Mission. He groomed himself with relentless hardwood and perseverance to set up the SBM Group. In the summer of 1974 he set foot in Madras with Grit and a visionary dream. Facing several hardships he started his journey as a typist and then an accountant in Parrys Corner cycling his way across the muddy streets of Madras slowing imbibing the nuances of Business. Investing all his savings, he took a risk – something which is synonymous with his character he set up an Oil Manufacturing plant in Ennore High road. The rest is history as they say, as SBM Oil Company grew from strength to strength in the field of lubricants, petroleum products and ink mediums supplying to all the major players across the country.
Rangaswamy Ragu has always had a passion for agriculture stemming from his strong farming roots. Mr.Ragu since the early 1990s has contributed to the agricultural economy of the country. In his quest for newer avenues he bought about 300 acres of land in the grape belt of Theni and with his continued determination got the license after 15 years for setting up the first winery in Tamil Nadu and founded Cumbum Valley Winery Pvt. Ltd. Cumbum Valley Winery continues to be the only Winery and the pride of Tamil Nadu fermenting the local Muscato grapes unique to this terroir. Cumbum Valley Winery and Vineyards has immensely contributed to the employment of the rural belt of Theni. Our protected cultivation is state of the art with technology brought in from Germany, Italy and Israel, thus changing the agricultural practices of the region.
